I have been working in, studying and writing about property, leadership and governance since 1974. This website shares what I have learnt.
A Brief History
Initially an architectural assistant whilst gaining an ONC and HNC in building, I left to work with single homeless people in Aberdeen. In those days it was a 'wet' shelter. People, mainly men, would stay overnight but would usually be extremely drunk. Many were chronic alcoholics.
I moved on to study full time at Plymouth Polytechnic (now University of Plymouth) for a degree in Social Policy.
I have worked at ten housing associations, six as Chief Executive: Worcestershire Housing Association, Beacon Housing Association, Bloxwich Housing Trust, Aldridge and Brownhills Housing Trust, Herefordshire Housing Group, Connexus Housing Group. Along the way, I also held posts of Deputy Chief Executive at WM Housing and Managing Director of Walsall Housing Group.
Not just housing, I have been a non-executive director at Community First, Blakenall New Deal for Communities and for 3 years chaired Money Box Credit Union. I have also chaired the Herefordshire Business Board and served for 4 years on the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership. Until recently, I was a housing advisor to the Telford Land Deal.
Academically, I have been a Visiting Fellow at Cardiff University, a lecturer (part time) at Worcester College of Technology and also hold a PG Diploma Sociology from the University of Worcester and an MSc in Management from Birmingham University. I was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Housing.
I was an NED with Chislehurst and Sidcup Housing Association and an occasional consultant with Campbell Tickell but until recently served as an NED with Heart of Medway HA.
I now serve as Chair of Keniston Housing Association.
